Draw the line! A conference on gender and science at DPU, Copenhagen, May 30-31, 2008

The Draw the line! Conference is co-organised by WOMEN-CORE and UPGEM (Understanding Puzzles in the Gendered European Map). This conference will bring together Danish and international scientists, policy makers and representatives from the business world. At the conference, WOMEN-CORE will present its most recent research results on women’s careers in construction research and will compare these to results from other research projects on other sectors of natural science research. We will look at the research institution as work place and the significance of a research career for women and men. We will compare the conditions that shape a research career in the academic and commercial research environments.  WOMEN-CORE will chair a 2 days workshop on ‘Drop outs within science in academia and the private sector’. We will present the project’s most interesting research results in a panel discussion with representatives of other research projects on gender and science in Europe. The conference will be held at the Danish School of Education (DPU) in Copenhagen, on May 30-31, 2008. Please register without charge by sending an e-mail to Søren Kyd, skja@dpu.dk.  The deadline for registration is April 29, 2008.

Mapping the maze: Getting more women to the top in research

On scientific boards women are under-represented in almost all European countries. The scarcity of women in senior positions in such bodies inevitably means that their opinions are less likely to be voicedin policy and decision-making processes, which may lead to biased decision-making and priority setting in scientific research. The aims of the expert group on Women In Research Decision Making (WIRDEM) have been to identify and review positive actions and gender equality measures at institutional and national level to promote women into senior positions in public research. The WIRDEM report has been produced during the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All, an initiative leading the way to a bolder strategy to establish definitely the fight against discrimination and to promote equality between women and men at EU level. It contributes successfully to the key activities of this Year, promoting rights, representation, recognition and respect. This report examines and describes in detail nomination procedures, obstacles, facts and funding limitations that women need to overcome in their academic careers. It reviews the procedures for evaluating and promoting research personnel to senior positions and identifies examples of good practice at national and institutional levels.

'Encouragement to Advance - Training Seminars for Women Scientists'

The programme 'Encouragement to Advance -Training Seminars for Women Scientists' intends to empower women scientists within the European Research Area (ERA), offering training on appointment procedures for professorships in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Trainings encourage mobility and supranational careers in research and higher education. A four-day-long seminar provides a surplus of knowledge according to  - international appointment procedures- training of how to conduct negotiations at universities committees- examination of application documents- individual support in career strategies development and career-objectives  Since the program ends in 2008, only one last seminar is held in Brussels in April 2008. This very last seminar-workshop is especially designed for female scientists doing research in MEDICINE, NATURAL SCIENCES, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY and ENGINEERING. Applications to the program and the grant budget are welcome now and are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Statistics in Focus: Women employed in Science and Technology

Increasing the human resources in science and technology is a key objective in order to meet the target set by the Lisbon summit in 2000 of making Europe the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world. One way of achieving this is by using the existing pool of highly trained women. Statistics in Focus takes a deeper look at female shares of HRSTO in different European countries.
