CVUT -Czech Technical University in Prague
Seven faculties and three institutes are basic units of the CVUT in Prague, which guarantees high quality instruction of more than 23 000 students, among them cca 2 600 at postgraduate level. More than 2 000 members of academic staff working in about 150 research groups can be considered as one of the largest research institutions in the Czech Republic.
The research is undertaken in all basic disciplines taught at the university, the major part of the research can be characterised as a mission oriented and applied research. The university also provides consultancies for the industry and for practising engineers and deals with practical problems through its research capability.
The Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague (partner in Women Core project) is one of the largest schools providing civil engineering university education world-wide. Over the years, graduates from the school have created engineering works which have laid grounds for the school's famous historical tradition. Keeping with the tradition of excellence, today's graduates exhibit a high quality of engineering craftsmanship and skills. The faculty has set up a modern three-degree system of organization of instruction based upon a greater flexibility of course selection for the final two years of study, and scheduling of courses according to students' individual interests. Students learn to make independent decisions, bear responsibility, and respond rapidly to changing needs of industry, business, and social environment through changes in their professional knowledge structure. Therefore, during their studies, they can flexibly form their own professional profile and specialization in close coordination with major organizations and firms in order to be prepared for the needs of their future profession, creating favourable conditions for their careers.
The research plays a central role in Faculty and Departmental activities. Research funding is increasingly covered by international and governmental grants, research agencies and industry. The faculty has also signed international research co-operation agreements with other European and American Universities, while further co-operation is based on departmental and individual links.
The staff of the Faculty is actively engaged in activities of numerous professional boards within international organisations, such as the CIB, RIELM, fib, IABSE, IASS, and others. Through these institutions, the staff of the Faculty is actively involved in solving both theoretical and practical tasks internationally. The Faculty has successfully completed approximately 450 research projects supported by both Czech and foreign grants in the last five years. The Faculty's research projects have won Czech funding from the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GAČR), Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (GA AVČR), Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Transport and Communications, SFDI, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment, SÚJB and internal CVUT grants. Besides, the Faculty's research projects have been granted funding within the 5th and 6th framework, and programmes INGO, COST, IAEA, Barrande, Jean Monnet, Leonardo da Vinci, Socrates, Aktion, Kontakt, and Copernicus.
The faculty offers 9 doctoral courses. Doctoral students are actively involved in research projects and their doctoral thesis often provide important findings and data for a specific research programme.
A wide range of faculty departments represents an important potential of specialists in various professional fields as mathematics, mechanics, architecture and building engineering, transport and water engineering, environmental engineering, landscaping and city planning, sustainable development, human resources etc.
Based on the Faculty's proposal, the Association of European Civil Engineering Faculties was established in 1992.
